Migraine Sufferer Tips

As a longtime sufferer of migraines, I truly understand how horrible it feels to have one. There's no treatment for migraines per se, but there are small changes I’ve made to my life to help prevent them from happening or being as bad as they used to be. These”tips” or “remedies” are very simple and straightforward, you might not even think they’ll help but trust me, they do - big time!

  1. Drink as much water as you possibly can in one day. Seriously! Have either your own personal water bottle or use a mason jar or even those plastic bottles everyone hates but still uses. Use the 8 by 8 rule. Drink 8oz glasses of water eight times a day. Download an app to help track your water intake or log it into a journal or even sticky note.

  2. Stretching is one thing I didn’t think would help but it weirdly does. I do it every morning after I’ve made my bed and every night before I get under the covers. It only takes five minutes and I know to some who say they don’t have minutes, you can find just five minutes either in the morning or at night for yourself, if you can’t, whose life are you living? Simply stretch out the legs, arms, neck, feet, back and wherever else I missed. Five minutes sis.

  3. Make sure you are getting between the recommended 200-600mg of magnesium per day. Studies show that when a person is experiencing a headache/migraine, the magnesium levels are particularly low. So doctors recommend taking some form of magnesium if you feel one beginning, or just make sure to get in the daily recommended intake to help prevent it. Also might be important to note, magnesium levels are commonly lower in women than in men. Green leafy vegetables, nuts/seeds, figs, salmon, tuna, peas, legumes, chickpeas, raspberries and so many more are a few sources of magnesium. However if you want to get the most magnesium from your diet, dark chocolate, avocados, and nuts should be strictly part of your diet. One ounce of nuts such as almonds and cashews has 82mg of Mg, then comes dark chocolate containing 64mg in an ounce, and avocados with 58mg per ounce.

Wake up. Get on the floor and stretch. Have an 8oz glass of water. Avocado toast with some dark chocolate and almonds crushed on top. Easy, healthy, and great way to start your day.
